October 25, 2001 Thanks to Sandy and Richard for their corrections to my history section.
March 14, 2002: After wondering how the below editor's note could've happened knowing I had typed the address in right, I finally have an answer! The following was sent to me Mr. Armstrong, who I am forever greatful to for answering my question, and I'm sure yours:
I've just been checking various websites to make sure that they are using the correct URL for Sangam's website. I noticed that you still have the old web address. This was changed to www.sangamwagggs.org.uk last September (after someone had hijacked the tajmahal.net site and set it up to redirect to an Asian porn site!) I know that some of you will have got the address from WAGGGS, who did not issue the new one until several months after the chgangeover. Would you please update your pages to contain the new address. If yours is an old website and no longer used, please feel free to ignore this email, but bear in mind that if I found it then others might too!
EDITOR"S NOTE: May 31, 2001 It was brought to my attention that a link on this page linked to porn. I'm sure how that happened but it was a major oversite. That link was taken off immediately. I thank the person greatly that brought it to my attention. I'm extremely sorry if anyone stumbled across it. I apoligize again.

I've been a Girl Scout since I was in kindergarten.  I earned my Gold and Silver award and feel that this is a powerful organization for a girl to be in.  If you aren't already a member I strongly suggest you become one, either as a scout or a leader, you can even volunteer to be an assitant troop leader if you don't think you can do it alone.  Speaking as someone who still remembers all her leaders and counslers, I can tell you, you have a big impact on a young girl and you are a role model.   Being a adult volunteer is a great way to help young girls become responsible leaders later in life.

gs_trefoil.jpg (1196 bytes)Silver Award: Service project award that can be obtained by doing many hours of community service followed by a service project that benefits your community or Girl Scouts.  You have to create and carryout your project but to my knowledge are not allowed to except monetary donations.  So if you need wood, you can't raise money for the wood, the wood itself must be donated.  This is a hard award to get and you have to be a atleast a Cadette level to earn it.gold_award.jpg (4390 bytes)

gs_trefoil.jpg (1196 bytes)Gold Award:  This is the Girl Scout equivalent of the much famed Eagle Scout.  It is just as hard if not harder to earn than the Eagle.   The outlines are the same as the Silver except your project shouldn't be for the benifit of Girl Scouts but specifically to fill a community need.  Also, the community service hours are much higher.

gs_trefoil.jpg (1196 bytes)Common Error:  Juliette Low is not the founder of Girl Scouts.  The Savannah, GA native is responsible for starting the American branch of it.  Girl Scouts was actually first headed by Agnes Baden-Powell.  Any Boy Scout might recognize the name Baden-Powell.  Ms. Baden-Powell is the sister of the Boy Scout founder.  It was Lord Baden-Powell who first came up with the idea of Girl Scouts. He saw a need to start a Scout group for girls after several girls were attended a Boy Scout rally in London.   The girls called themselves girl scouts.  And so was born the Girl Scouts which turned into the World Assoc. of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Later, Olave Baden-Powell, Lord Baden-Powell's wife, got involved and became the only person to hold the title of World Chief Guide.   Perhaps you wonder about the "Girl Guides"  name.  Actually, USA is one of the few countries who use the Girl Scouts term.  Although the first ones called themselves "scouts", Lord Baden-Powell chose the name "Girl Guides" after a famous corps in India.  In 1910, the official movement, Girl Guides Association was founded.  By 1912 Juliet Low founded the USA Girl Scouts (note according to WAGGS, USA uses "scouts" because "guides" was an unacceptable term die to its common US definition of an indian hunter.)

gs_trefoil.jpg (1196 bytes)Membership:  as of May 2000, there are approximately 10 million WAGGGS members world-wide and 140 participating countries.
